No, I wasn't taking two pictures at once. But I shot these two photos close enough together in time that you get a sense of why Allan looks so focused. If you look closely at the right-hand picture you can see the fish just under the surface of the water, right after he jumped and made that big spash. This is what it's all about!
This is not the result of the photos above. In fact, it's not even from the same year. Here we have Allan with about a four-pound Northern Pike (sorry Allan, was that really eight pounds?). These fish are fun to catch, if you can land them. They have razor-shap teeth and quite often they bite the line (and thus, your expensive lure) off before you can get them into the boat.
Here's another picture of Allan, this time with a largemouth bass. Is this one happy camper, or what? This was caught on the "big lake," Lake Champlain. It's about an eight-pounder (or is that twelve pounds, Allan?). By the way, we always practice "catch and release." Every fish we catch stays out of the water only about 30 seconds. Pam, my wife, doesn't believe we ever catch any fish at all, because we never bring any home. Now who would want to schlep one of these guys all the way back to New York City?

Just so you don't think I never catch any fish myself, here's picture of me with what I think is a largemouth bass--although it may be a smallmouth. Of course, I didn't take the picture. That may be why you can't recognize me.

This is my favorite picture from all of our trips up north. Actually, it is from the first year Allan and I went fishing together. This, to me, is what fishing is all about. It was taken toward the end of the day when I was so sunburned my ears eventually peeled and my right arm was about to fall off from the ache of casting my rod about (by my estimate) 500 times. I slept well that night.
Bonus Picture
If you've come with me this far you might as well see my favorite fishing hole of all times. This is at Lake Jacomo (stands for Jackson County Mo.) where I re-discovered fishing with that rod and reel Allan lent me. It's about a 1000 acre man-made lake. I remember when it was "built" back in the 50's. It's about a 15- minute drive from the old homeplace. I took this picture at about 6 am, just before I dropped my line in the water.
